Claudia Alta Taylor, better knownbras Lady Bird Johnson, grew up in the northeast Texas city of Karnack. As abryoung girl, she first connected with nature along the shores of Caddo Lake nearbrthe Louisiana border. Later in life, as the wife of Lyndon Baines Johnson, the 36thpresident of the United States, Lady Bird grew her love of nature into a lifetimebrof environmental achievements. One such accomplishment was the enactment of thebrHighway Beautification Act. Signed in 1965, it called for the general beautificationbrof the nation’s roadways.
Today, native plants adorn ourbrnation's parks and public spaces while countless miles of lush roadside retreatsbrcontinue to be seeded and reseeded each year. Thanks in part to her vision, 4,600brspecies of wildflowers come to life across Texas each spring. Lady Bird passed awaybrin the summer of 2007, but her passion for natural beauty lives on wherever flowersbrbloom.
