Season Update
23-2-1 (13-1)
Despite losing many key players from last year's 30-winbrteam, the Lady Dragons haven't missed a beat as the rebuilding process has beenbrmore like a reloading process. There's a sense of excitement in the air as the 2013-2014brdistrict champions enter the playoffs as the top-ranked team in the area and 15thin the nation. Edging out a very solid Keller Lady Indians squad (12-1-1), thisbryear marks the sixth outright championship for head coach Matt Colvin, a streakbrthat started in 2002. This year is no different — Southlake Carroll has had abrtremendous year and is peaking at just the right time. Scoring a combined 13brgoals in their last two games as well as winning 18 of their last 19, they chargebrinto the postseason to take on Arlington Lamar in the first round.
Although they suffered their firstbrloss of the year near the end of the season — a one-point heartbreaker againstbrdistrict 4-5A rival Keller — the Lady Dragons have played near perfect soccerbrthis season. With wins over Keller, Arlington Martin and Timber Creek, thebrDragons have laid the groundwork for another state championship run.
About the team
This season is marked with 11 returning seniors who havebrsome unfinished business to take care of after advancing all the way to thebrstate finals before losing to 5A powerhouse Plano West a season ago. The LadybrDragons’ formula for success has been consistent and simple — a loadedbroffensive attack and a stingy defense. With plenty of experienced leadershipbrand up-and-coming underclassmen, this year’s team continues to win in dominantbrfashion.
The Dragon offensive assault ranksbramong the best in the area in goals per game at 4.1. Pacing the team in totalbrpoints is a dynamic pair of sophomore forwards, Grace Cory and Allie Luna. Cory, brthe 2013 Newcomer of the Year after setting numerous records in her freshman season, brleads the team in goals (21), assists (14) and total points (56). Luna isbrcoming on strong with seven goals and 13 assists on the season. Juniorbrsharpshooter Danielle Davis adds to the team's scoring rolls and long-termbrpotential with 14 goals.
Yet through it all, it's defensebrthat wins championships, and the Lady Dragons have more than enough to meetbrtheir destiny head-on. Having only given up six goals in 20 games this season, thebrteam is tied for second in the area in goals allowed per game at a minisculebr0.3 gpg. With the likes of Louisiana Tech commit Alya Shams in the defensivebrbackfield, there aren't many shots on goal. When there are, a pair of goaliesbris ready in junior Jamie Phelps and senior Ellie Kemins, who have combined forbr14 shutouts on the year. Kemins plans to take her skills to Texas A&MbrTexarkana in the fall.
