WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY? I grew up playing high-level sports here in North Texas, and I eventually ended orthopedic surgeries because of injuries I sustained. I remember feeling a large debt of gratitude towards the doctors who put me back together, so I thought it would be rewarding to be able to do the same for others.
ARE THERE ANY NEW PROCEDURES THAT YOU OFFER? The vast majority of surgeries I perform can be done minimally invasive, with incisions the same length as the width of your pinky finger. We use advanced surgical techniques to allow us to get the job done with minimal tissue injury. This results in faster healing, less scar formation and, in many cases, a quicker recovery.
Howard W. Harris, M.D.
WHAT IS YOUR HEALTHCARE PASSION? My passion in medicine is to provide exceptional specialized orthopedic care to my patients in a comfortable, efficient and professional manner. I specialize in shoulder repair and reconstruction to help relieve shoulder pain and improve function to get patients back to the activities they love.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? I particularly enjoy working with my shoulder patients, as they are very diverse. Shoulder injuries are present from youth athletics to the elderly, laborers to executives and they all have different expectations. I enjoy diagnosing a variety of different shoulder problems and customizing the treatment to meet the individual patient’s needs.
O. David Taunton Jr., M.D.
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A TOP DOC BY YOUR NORTH TEXAS PEERS? In a word, humbling. I believe everyone enjoys being appreciated for the work they do. As doctors, we dedicate our lives to our profession, making it more of a calling, and to be recognized for the quality of that effort is very gratifying.
WHAT IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? My father is a physician, and his advice when I started my profession was to do quality work and the rest would take care of itself, and I found that to be true. My partners and I have essentially taken the old GMC marketing statement of “Do one thing. Do it well” and based our practice around that concept.
