“Mum” is the word at Grapevine’s newest historical exhibit celebrating one of Texas’ biggest icons.
Running from Sept. 23 to Oct. 14, “Mumentous: Football, Glue Guns, Moms And A Super-Sized High School Tradition Born Deep In The Heart Of Texas” is a new exhibit presented by the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Texas Lakes Trail Region and author and photographer Amy J. Schultz. Based on Amy’s own research, the exhibit takes a look at the 100-year tradition of mums and how they came to be a popular homecoming staple in Texas.
“While the mum is a stunning visual in and of itself, it’s the community engagement aspect that really makes it come to life,” Amy says. “Throughout my research, I discovered just how popular, funny, personal and utterly relatable mums can be when you look at them through the lenses of the kids who wear them.”
More than anything else, Amy sees “Mumentous” as a tribute to legacies across generations and an ode to mothers and daughters alike.
“We are so thrilled to be the first city to host this amazing exhibit paying tribute to the history and cultural significance of the homecoming mum,” Grapevine communications director Elizabeth Schrack says. “We’re excited to share this one-of-a-kind exhibit with all of our visitors and show off such a unique Texas tradition.”
The exhibit is open now at 636 S. Main St. and will host an open house on Oct. 4. To learn more about the exhibit and the book it’s based on, visit MumentousBook.com.
