The Southlake Carroll Dragons football team accomplished their season's goal with a 36-29 win over Fort Bend Hightower in the UIL State Championship game. A crowd of 42,896 gathered to watch this year's "Never Say Die" team rally late once again to finish off an impressive 16-0 season and bring home the school's record tying eighth State Championship (Celina 8 and Plano 7).
In a game full of outstanding play on both sides of the ball, perhaps the biggest turn around came in the third quarter as linebacker Will Davis, made consecutives stops on third and fourth down with three yards to go. Later named the game's Defensive MVP, Davis' play along with Tanner Jacobsen, Jeff Miller, Brian Bonacci and the entire defensive unit definitely changed the momentum in the second half.
Game Offensive MVP Kenny Hill accounted for 345 yards and four touchdowns. Through his typical power rushing game he ran for 116 yards, two scores including a 2xp that gave the Dragons a solid 7 point lead with just nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Hill also showed off his efficiency in the pocket completing 80 percent of his passes (19-of-24) for 229 yards and touchdown passes to Sabian Holmes (59 yards) and Corey Kemp (25 yards).
Head Coach Hal Wasson offcially steps out of the shadows of the coaches before him as he brings home his first State Championship to Southlake. Hill and defensive standout Jacobsen, both Juniors, will return next season- putting Wasson and Southlake amongst the state's front runners yet again.
Congratulations to the team for an Outstanding Season!
