After waiting for over 50 years to go to space, Wally Funk finally fulfilled her dream when she flew in Blue Origin’s New Shepard on July 20. This weekend, Grapevine is honoring her achievements with a special parade down Historic Main Street.
On Saturday, August 7, the city of Grapevine will host a parade and community celebration in Wally’s honor. The parade will start at noon on Wall Street and will head south on Main Street toward Dallas Road, according to a media release. The parade will end on Peace Plaza at Grapevine Main Station at 815 S. Main St., with Wally and Grapevine Mayor William D. Tate giving remarks at the end of the celebration. A limited number of commemorative items will also be available such as a Wally Funk pen, a replica of Wally’s lapel pin and astronaut ice cream courtesy of Space Center Houston.
“It is a great day for Grapevine when one of our most treasured citizens participates in such a historic event,” Mayor Tate says in the media release. “Wally Funk is a true trailblazer, and I and all of the residents of Grapevine are so proud of her as she propels not only herself but the entire world into the realm of commercial space travel.”
