In an effort to protect Texas' current water supply and ensure that the state's growing cities, industry and farms will have the water they need for the next 50 years, lawmakers proposed a plan they hope will pass after tomorrow's election.
Proposition 6 first began as SJR1 when the 83rd Texas Legislature passed it in April of this year, but the piece of legislation can only be implemented if it passes tomorrow. According to lawmakers, if it fails, almost half of all Texans won't have enough water during certain drought conditions by the year 2060. The loss of income could also rise to $116 billion annually, with more than 1 million jobs lost.
Funds invested by Prop 6 will provide low-interest loans — not grants — for water supply projects and can only be used for water supply projects included in Texas' State Water Plan.
