The 2014 Susan G. Komen Greater Fort Worth Race for the Cure® was held Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Ridgmar Mall. More than 7,000 individuals participated in the Race, raising over $691,500 of funds for the fight against breast cancer to date.
The family-friendly event featured a 5K and one mile fun run/walk, as well as a breast cancer survivor parade, Kids for the Cure activities including children's yoga and a bounce house, as well as a KoMEN Cave – an area of the Race dedicated to male breast cancer survivors and co-survivors of women fighting the disease featuring classic cars, motorcycles, golf swing training and home improvement demos.
“Race for the Cure and the generous donations that our local community give allows Komen Greater Fort Worth to provide breast cancer screening, treatment and education to thousands of women every year in Tarrant, Parker, Johnson and Hood counties,” says Gynna Harlin, president of the board of directors for Susan G. Komen Greater Fort Worth Affiliate.
The Race for the Cure® raises funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.
The largest charitable 5K Race in Tarrant County, the Race is the largest fundraiser for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Greater Fort Worth. Seventy-five percent of the funds raised support breast cancer detection, treatment and education locally in Tarrant, Parker, Johnson and Hood counties, with the remaining 25 percent going to national research initiatives.
Registration fees help to provide women and men in the Komen Greater Fort Worth four-county territory with services that have literally saved lives.
These fees help make the following programs possible through grants to local organizations: free and low-cost mammograms and diagnostics; medical treatment for qualified breast cancer patients who cannot afford care, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation; support services including support groups, assistance with finding financial resources, prescription refills and transportation to medical appointments; and education about the warning signs of breast cancer, methods of early detection and the latest treatment options.
Though the Race has passed, individuals can still support the cause by donating to Komen Greater Fort Worth. Competitive fundraising will remain open through June 10, but donations are accepted at any time. Participants can make and track donations at www.komengreaterfortworth.org.
Since 1992, more than 217,000 people have participated in the local Race for the Cure, raising more than $22 million dollars for the cause.
