Southlake Kiwanis will host their 7th annual 5K run at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 17 at Dragon Stadium.
Kiwanis is part of an international group with the goal to improve the lives of children in their communities. No other service organization in our area supports as wide a range of children's charities with less overhead. Race details and registration is available at run4kids.athlete360.com
"This is the 7th annual Run 4 Kids 5K and is our largest fund raiser of the year with all proceeds going directly back into charities focused on kids," explains Southlake Kiwanis Vice President and Board Member John Thane. "Additionally, we support Key Clubs (student led service organizations) in Carroll, Colleyville and Grapevine high schools to provide leadership and community service direction to those students."
Key Clubs fosters a spirit of volunteering and giving back that benefits students and the local communities, while building a life-long reinforcement of volunteering.
This annual run helps Kiwanis spread their message and generate critical financial aid for the groups they support.
In the past, the club has impacted such wide-reaching programs in and around our communities as cooking breakfast for Relay for Life, building homes with Habitat for Humanities, supporting the Boy's and Girl's Clubs, Alliane for Children, Battered Women's Shelter, Communities in Schools, Youth World, LeaderKids, GRACE, Spokes4Hope, Salvation Army, Community Storehouse and others.
Kiwanis also supports scholarships, including one in memory of former Dragon Coach Charlie Stalcup.
Stalcup showed grace and perseverance and was a role model for his players and his students as he continued to lead by example while battling cancer. His memory, and strength of spirit, is remembered each season with an award of the Stalcup Award - an annual scholarship awarded in February. Additional scholarships help deserving Key Club members persue further education.
All registered runners - for the Fun Run (walk) and 5K will receive a Technical (sweat-wicking Tshirt) and Runners Bag (drawstring type) filled with samples, discounts to local merchants and restaurants, and other "goodies." The value of the goodie bag is estimated to be over $100 by itself.
"The participant bag alone is worth more than the registration fee with free appetizer certificate from Del Frisco's Grille and free CRYO session at Life's Medicine to name only two," Thane says.
Southlake Kiwanis meets at Timmaron Country Club on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month for a breakfast meeting. Guests are always welcome. Further information on the club is at KiwanisOfSouthlake.org.
