SeasonbrUpdate
5-4br(2-2)
Proving to be a growing force in TexasbrLacrosse, the 5-4 Dragons have already topped last year’s win total with fourbrgames remaining on the season. With the knowledge that to be the best, you havebrto play the best, head coach Bart Sullivan loaded the already tough D1 districtbrplay — including No. 1 state-ranked Dallas Jesuit— with non-district gamesbragainst some very accomplished teams in the state and the region. The Dragons, havingbrlost a close match to Jesuit, 4-7, also had a narrow 11-16 defeat from thebrstate’s No. 2 ranked team, The Woodlands. For good measure, the Dragons traveledbrto Denver for a head-to-head match with Colorado’s defending back-to-back statebrchampions and current No. 1 Arapahoe High School. With a win over non-districtbropponent Kingwood (Houston), 14-6, the team has been more than ready forbrdistrict play. With a lopsided 20-5 defeat over Plano and a close win overbrtheir neighbor Plano West, 5-3, the team is now on a three-game winning streakbrthat leaves them in great position for a playoff run as they finish up thebrregular season against rival Allen Eagles at Dragon Stadium.
About thebrteam
In his second year at Southlake, Sullivan, bra University of Denver All-Decade Team selection, has stressed an open system thatbrfocuses on creativity and playmaking. This style has proven both entertainingbrand effective. Two seniors with D1 college commitments lead this year’s team — attackerbrBryce Wasserman and midfielder Connor Harryman. Along with fellow seniors TimbrBarnhart and Scott Dickey, the up-and-coming Dragons have averaged nearly 11brgoals per game. Defensively, seniors Kenny Lear, Charlie Compagnone and CooperbrGreen, along with another division one commit Jack Welding, keep opposing teamsbrat bay, giving up seven goals per contest. Combined, the squads have a goalbrdifferential that ranks eighth in the entire state of Texas.
Inbraddition to the team's successes so far this year, the future of DragonbrLacrosse might be even brighter as underclassmen account for more than 70brpercent of the varsity roster. This number doesn’t just reflect potential — itbris also indicative of the growing popularity of lacrosse throughout Southlakebrand North Texas.
