On November 7th, Tarrant County commissioners officially renamed its courthouse after former Southlake Mayor and longtime Precinct 3 Commissioner Gary Fickes. A native of Houston, he first moved to Southlake in 1982 and served as its mayor from 1989 to1996, key growth years for the city. Serving his community for four decades, the former Southlake Style Community Impact Award recipient was first elected to the position of county commissioner in 2006. After choosing not to run for reelection, he will serve through the remainder of the year and will then be replaced by Matt Krause who won the position during the November 5th election. During his 18 year tenure as commissioner Fickes championed many causes from transportation, healthcare, and economic development to quality of life for Tarrant County seniors. “It takes a team, you can’t do it by yourself,” Fickes said at the ribbon cutting held in his honor. “It’s been a really fulfilling time for me and, I hope, for the taxpayers. That’s who we work for and that’s something we can’t ever forget.”
