Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced a public health disaster Thursday, March 19, in response to the coronavirus, the first time the declaration has been issued since 1901.
After over 100 Texans got infected with the coronavirus, and three people died earlier this week, Abbott declared the disaster and ordered schools, bars, clubs and gyms to close down until April 3. Restaurants can still offer to-go service exclusively, and Abbott recommended people avoid large group gatherings of more than 10 people.
"We must strangle the expansion by reducing the ways we are currently transmitting it," Abbott says. "We are doing this now, today, so that we can get back to business as usual more quickly."
Carroll ISD previously closed down its campuses until March 27 in response to the coronavirus, but after Abbott’s declaration goes into effect at midnight on Friday, the district will remain closed until April 3. The state will review campuses reopening at that time.
