Growth and development are natural in every child's life, but that doesn't mean they don't experience their own challenges. If you're concerned for your child's mental and emotional well-being, here are five things to look out for.
Increased Isolation
School can feel overstimulating and overwhelming for children, so sometimes they need time by themselves. But if your child won’t leave their room or is sleeping for excessive periods of time, there may be something else going on.
Increased Irritability
We know kids can have big feelings, so be on alert for changes in tolerance. If things that never bothered them before are suddenly creating a strong reaction, it's more than likely that something is causing them internal distress.
Clothing Choices Inconsistent With The Weather
Sweatshirts outside in the summer don’t go together. Sweats are always comfortable at home no matter the season, but if your child is wearing a sweatshirt outside constantly, they could be attempting to cover scars from self-harming or are experiencing a high amount of insecurity.
Frequent Cancellations
Socialization is an important aspect of a child’s development. It is not abnormal for a child or teen to want to spend a lot of time with their friends, so if they are frequently canceling on others to stay home or are avoidant to going places with others their age, this could be a point of concern. This could also include abandoning activities or clubs they once enjoyed. It could be a sign of depression, bullying or social anxiety.
Declining Grades
Grades can change for many reasons. Teachers might not have put a grade in, a student forgot to turn something in, or a child might not understand the subject. If your child's grades are declining in a way that is abnormal, reach out to your child's teacher to gain more insight into what is going on.
How Can I Help My Child?
If you notice any of these signs, talk with your child and listen to them intentionally. Remember that it is a real possibility your child may be experiencing something you're not aware of yet. If your child is engaging in harmful behaviors, remove access to sharp objects and medications to ensure your child's safety. It's also imperative to find a therapist or therapeutic program to gain more insight into what's going on and how you can work to improve your child's mental health.
