When the 2022 baseball season begins on April 7, a Colleyville native will be among the players taking the field. Bobby Witt Jr. is set to make his major league debut playing third base with the Kansas City Royals.
“[A] lifelong dream came true today!” he says via Twitter. “It’s go time!”
The son of former MLB pitcher Bobby Witt, who won a World Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, Bobby Witt Jr. was drafted by the Royals in 2019 as the second pick in the first round, according to MLB.com.
During this year’s spring training, the 21-year-old, who is currently the No. 1 prospect in the league, had a .406 batting average, three home runs and eight RBIs in 32 at-bats. While down in the minor leagues, his batting average was .283, with 34 home runs and 124 RBIs in 661 at-bats, according to MLB.com.
On April 5 via Twitter, the Royals posted a video of manager Mike Matheny telling Bobby Witt Jr. they were bringing him up.
“I know we’ve told you for a long time to be patient and to just trust everybody, that the opportunity had to be right, the timing had to be right, in order for you to be here,” Mike says in the video. “And it’s right.”
The Royals will kick off their season on April 7 against the Cleveland Guardians in a home game at Kauffman Stadium. For more information, visit MLB.com/Royals.
