Mothers and daughters came together last week to collect donations for charities working hard for locals in need across the community.
SASO Girls is a local nonprofit that brings mothers and high school daughters together across Southlake to benefit philanthropies around the area. Board Vice President Sarah Cropper says they normally work with organizations such as the Battered Women’s Foundation and GRACE to promote positive change in the community.
“Ordinarily, we would have been out in the community volunteering for other organizations such as Miracle League of Southlake, the Spring Carnival with Youth World and I Can Still Shine,” Sarah says. “But COVID-19 put a halt to that in early March.”
In place of their usual events, SASO Girls instead hosted its first station donation drive-thru on Sunday, June 28 at Southlake Carroll ISD. Twelve mother-daughter duos came together at Carroll Senior, High and Middle School to collect and deliver food, pet supplies and personal care donations, all while maintaining social distancing.
“Donors would drive up and pop the trunk, and each mother-daughter would remove the donations from the trunk and put them in the various bins,” Sarah says. “We had masks, gloves and hand sanitizer. This was a way we could still help our charities while remaining safe.”
Sarah says the girls collected five trunks worth of donations from the station drive. The event was so successful that the organization is looking to hold another drive in the near future.
“It was a safe, fun event all around,” Sarah says. “We’re very thankful for Southlake Carroll ISD, our volunteers and the generosity of the community that allowed us to still contribute to the charities supporting those need.”
