Ten years ago, the ice bucket challenge swept the nation in raising awareness for ALS. This week, one Southlake resident brought the challenge back in honor of her father.
On Monday, July 15th, Ashley Burnett hosted a community ice bucket challenge at Hawaiian Falls Roanoke to raise money for her dad, Todd.
“One year ago, my dad was diagnosed with ALS,” Ashley says. “I wanted to do something to help raise money and awareness in the fight against this awful disease. That’s when I had the idea to gather a bunch of people and do a big ice bucket challenge in honor of my dad.”
Nearly 200 guests came to the waterpark to show support and dump ice buckets on their heads. Thanks to their generous donations, Ashley successfully raised $14,585 for the ALS Association, more than triple her initial fundraising goal. Guests even got to meet San Francisco 49ers tight end Brent Jones, who is friends with the family.
“I am so grateful that Hawaiian Falls jumped on board to partner with me in throwing this awesome fundraiser,” Ashley says. “With a disease that is full of the unknown and often feels so hopeless, raising money through this event gives my family back a little bit of that hope.”
