For over three years, Shane Bybee has been helping families prepare for college through his tutoring business Bybee College Prep. Now he’s continuing that mission through his new weekly podcast, “Let’s Talk College.”
A lifetime educator and instructor, Shane has always respected how difficult the college admissions process can be. Since he went to college 30 years ago, Shane has seen students apply to more colleges, receive even fewer acceptance letters and have a harder time getting into their school of choice. But while Shane is helping prepare students for college, he’s also getting a firsthand account of the admissions process through “Let’s Talk College.”
“The idea is to talk with students, parents I’ve worked with in the past, and get an idea of what you’re doing now, how you got there and what was the college path was like for you,” Shane remarks in his first episode. “But mostly, it’s just a conversation. It’s just talking about what you’re doing and where you are.”
The first three episodes were released last week and has Shane sitting down with a University of Colorado Boulder graduate, a current New York University senior and a parent of a Texas A&M University student. Shane says he wants to include multiple perspectives to get a holistic picture of the college experience for his listeners.
“One of the purposes of the podcast is to talk to people and clarify that there is not one path,” Shane says. “I think some people have this view that in order to be successful, you need to go to one of these elite schools. That’s not the only way you’re going to be successful. That’s not the only way you’re going to get to your goals.”
Above all, Shane hopes to show people how to follow their passion and be successful in their educational aspirations at the same time.
“I’m all about do what you’re passionate about,” Shane says. “Do what you enjoy. Do what you’re good at. If you do what you’re good at, things will take care of themselves.”
