Carroll Dragon Alumni Award Winners
L to R: Peggy Foster, Wanda Carter, and Brian Hodges.
Peggy Foster – 2019 Phil Barber Award for Outstanding Community Patron
Peggy first moved to this area in 1929 when her parents took over the Masonic Orphanage for Boys. Her father was a coach and she grew up going to all the sporting events. This is when her love for all sports was born. She went to SMU and got a degree in education and began teaching in Odessa, where she met and married her husband, Herman, who was a coach. Over the years, they raised a sports-loving family. They moved to Southlake in 2009 to be closer to family and to watch one of their grandsons play Dragon football. Peggy enjoys all sports and is just as likely to be cheering at a baseball or basketball game, too! Though Herman passed away in 2016, Peggy has continued to support her beloved Dragons, affectionately referring to all of them as “her kids.” Everyone can tell when Ms. Peggy is in the stands before they ever hear her cheering voice…you can hear her Dragon cowbell a mile away!
Wanda Carter – 2019 Chauncey Willingham Award for Outstanding Faculty
Wanda (Bradbury) Carter came to Carroll ISD as a young math teacher in 1972. She was honored three times as Carroll High School Teacher of the Year in 1978, 1990 and 1993 and as Carroll ISD Teacher of the Year in 1991. She served as math department chair for 10 years and led several student organizations over the years including math league, future teachers association and junior engineering technical society. Known for running a very tight classroom (late work was never accepted!), she is also remembered by many as an inspiring educator who was full of surprises…more than one student recalls her randomly stopping a school bus on a field trip because everyone deserved a little Dairy Queen ice cream. Although Mrs. Carter left Carroll ISD in 2002, she continues to teach as an adjunct instructor of math at Tarrant County College District. When she isn’t inspiring bright minds, she can usually be found spending time with her husband of more than 34 years, Russ, their three horses and three dogs out on their acres of land watching the hay grow.
Brian Hodges – Jay Armstrong Award for Outstanding Dragon Alumni
The son of Dragons, Brian graduated from Carroll in 1979 and left Southlake to further his education and begin his career. Brian & his family returned in 2011, just in time for his youngest daughter, Emily, to follow in the family footsteps and begin her high school journey as a Dragon. Brian’s love and enthusiasm for all things Carroll, especially it’s commitment to excellence and integrity, is the core of who he is. He has always been known for his big heart, his generosity and a deep devotion to the Dragon community at large. Brian is a strong supporter of Dragon Nation and its many organizations, especially alumni. He has served on the Carroll Education Foundation and is most proud of being a charter member of The Tradition: The Dragon Alumni Network. He is a living legacy of the early traditions and foundations of Carroll and shows us all what it truly means to be a Dragon.
