Carroll ISD paved the way toward a new fine arts complex and a new future on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at Carroll Senior High School. Southlake Carroll parents, teachers, faculty, staff and students gathered at the site of the new fine arts complex that will go up alongside the campus. The band played an opening tune, the choir sang Christmas carols and, after CISD Superintendent Dr. David Faltys gave opening remarks, children and their parents rushed to sign their names on the slabs of the future arts complex.
“There are very few high schools in the country with this type of facility,” Huckabee Architects Principal Blaik Ritchie remarks. “It just speaks to the ongoing tradition of excellence for which Carroll ISD is known.”
The project originated from a $208 million bond that voters approved of in May 2017, according to a previous Southlake Style article. The bond package includes additional classrooms to each elementary school, new school buses and technology infrastructure and renovations to preexisting facilities. One of the larger inclusions in the bond package is the new fine arts complex, which would be utilized by the senior high school’s music and theater programs.
“While this is a project to accommodate the award-winning music and theater programs that have outgrown their spaces, it was more than that,” Blaik expresses. “It’s a fine arts center to draw together a campus and bring all of these areas together. It became a much bigger thing.
The new complex will include a 700-seat performance area and additional classrooms for fine arts teachers and their students. CSHS Principal Shawn Duhon says he looks forward to the project's construction and seeing how it impacts the campus in the future.
“I’ve always said it takes the three A’s – and we already have the academics and the athletics,” Shawn says. “This right here is proof that the arts are excellent in Carroll, and we’re going to continue that.”
The new fine arts complex is expected to be completed by April 2020. Shawn says the school will host its first fine arts signing day after the complex is finished.
