Former Carroll High School boys lacrosse player Connor Harryman just touched down in Southlake and is in town for college competition as his Bellarmine University Knights take on Air Force tomorrow, April 4, at noon, at Dragon Stadium.
The freshman midfielder, son of Scott and Laura, has started in three games and appeared in all seven this season, with the latest being the biggest of his collegiate career. Harryman showed "superiority in the face-off game and (led) five unanswered goals in the last period" (according to the team's website) in a momentum-boosting, 9-3 win over Marquette on Tuesday. One of the five goals was his own and his first of the season. He's loving his time at the Louisville, Ky. university.
"I love being with this team," he said. "They're a great group of guys. We hit a rough patch a few weeks ago in our division, and no one on the team liked the taste of losing to those teams. We had the big win against Marquette, which I think will spark a chain reaction. We can win out the rest of our games this season."
Being so far from home isn't a big adjustment for Harryman, as he said he likes the real world situation. Competing at the college level is a welcomed challenge.
"The talent level - there's a big, big jump," he said. "In college a lot of the athletes that go to [Division I] schools are the biggest, strongest and fastest at their [high] school, but as soon as you jump up to this level, you realize you've got a lot of work to do. It makes you better and gives you something to work for."
Harryman is a chemistry major, looking to go to medical school after his undergraduate studies are completed.
This weekend's matchup comes to Southlake with the help of Bellarmine head coach Kevin Burns, who approached former Bellarmine coach and current Dragons head coach Bart Sullivan, asking to play in Southlake.
"People around Southlake have loved the big occurrences and it helps draw a bigger name for lacrosse in the Metroplex," Harryman said. "[Dragon Stadium] is well-suited for this to be held."
Returning to play on his home field is surreal, Harryman said.
"There's a large fan base," he said. "We will have more people in attendance than our [Bellarmine] home games, as the sport is growing in the Metroplex. It's a great feeling to play on my home turf. Hopefully this could be a home field advantage."
Five other local players will participate in the game on Saturday, including alumni from Coppell, Episcopal School of Dallas, Liberty Christian, and Jesuit.
"I do know a bunch of those guys," Harryman said. "Some are teammates now, some are past teammates. It's good to see a bunch of my friends are able to move on to the next level just like I have."
According to Bellarmine's website, Harryman was selected to the All-District team as a senior at Carroll after accumulating 154 ground balls, 23 goals and 16 assists. He was named team captain, all-District honorable-mention selection as a junior, and a member of Student Athletes Serving Others for three years.
