Dragons have many wonderful qualities. Here at Charis, we believe in working with children to develop their very best characteristics, including the following:
Strength & Resilience: Dragons are often depicted as powerful and resilient creatures. When it comes to mental health, a dragon could symbolize the inner strength and resilience that individuals possess to overcome challenges and adversity. At Charis, patients work daily and weekly in individual and group therapy. This helps our patients build resilience and learn to overcome all of the challenges that they face.
Guardianship & Protectiveness: Dragons are often portrayed as guardians or protectors of treasure or territories. In the context of mental health, a dragon could represent the protective instinct to safeguard one's well-being and boundaries. It could also symbolize the support network of friends, family and mental health professionals who help protect and support individuals during difficult times. In our psycho-education groups at Charis, we have daily groups that cover different topics such as self-worth, boundaries and identifying positive support systems.
Transformation & Growth: In some myths, dragons transform, whether they're just hatching from eggs or are fully grown adults. Their transformations could symbolize the process of personal growth that individuals experience as they navigate their mental health journey, overcoming obstacles and evolving into stronger, more resilient versions of themselves. When a patient starts at Charis, they are often at a very low point. One of the best things about working at Charis is getting to see these patients improve and get stronger. By the end of treatment, what you see is an individual who is transformed in a very positive way.
Balance & Integration: Dragons are often depicted as creatures with both positive and negative qualities, such as power and destruction. In the context of mental health, a dragon could symbolize the need to find balance and integrate different aspects of oneself, including strengths and vulnerabilities, to achieve mental well-being. Charis always starts the day with a yoga class for all patients to help them achieve physical and mental balance.
Creativity & Imagination: Dragons are captivating creatures that have captured human imagination for centuries. In the context of mental health, a dragon could symbolize the creative and imaginative aspects of the mind that can be harnessed for self-expression. At Charis, we regularly incorporate art activities into our psycho-education groups. If you visit Charis, you will see ceiling tiles that were painted by patients with positive messages. One day, we will have all the tiles filled up with art from patients. Additionally, patients at Charis participate in equine therapy at a local ranch once a week. This helps patients with problem-solving and learning to cope with challenges.
