Carroll ISD hosted a virtual Q&A on Thursday, July 30, to answer questions about the 2020-2021 school year. The Dragon Live Chat, an hour virtual session led by Superintendent Dr. David Faltys, touched on a series of topics including the learning platforms available to students.
“Things are very fluid,” Faltys shares during the Q&A. “[Now] we will be doing in-person instruction with the parent choice of allowing for remote instruction.”
Faltys was joined by fellow CISD staff and officials, including school board president Michelle Moore.
“The board has been working very closely with the administration to make sure they have what they need to be successful,” Moore says. “I know it has been a really difficult time. The board wants the very best for our students.”
CISD’s Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Dr. Janet McDade, Executive Director of Special Programs Tyisha Nelson, Executive Director of Technology Randy Stuart and Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction Gina Peddy also answered questions ranging from curriculum night and nursing station procedures to special programs and extracurricular activities.
Big takeaways included that students were still going to eat lunch in a cafeteria setting, with the option for schools to stagger lunch periods to retain distance; elementary students engaging with virtual education would participate in more asynchronous instruction than secondary students; elementary students would still have outdoor recess; and students could still participate in in-person extracurricular activities if they were enrolled in Dragon Virtual Academy.
Parents have until August 4 to complete their annual student verification, where they will select what platform their child will start the school year with. This choice will lock in a child’s platform for the first grading period, the first nine weeks of school. If a parent wants to change platforms after that time, they should submit a written request via email two weeks prior to the next grading period.
“We understand these are stressful times,” Faltys shares to wrap up the session. “Everything will be OK.”
The Q&A can be viewed in its entirety on the district’s Facebook page. The district is also updating this website with new information as it becomes available.
