Although the timeline has changed, the University Interscholastic League is still committed to hosting the sports that Texans know and love.
After Texas Gov. Greg Abbott closed schools until May 4 in response to the coronavirus, the UIL modified its contingency plans and extended its timeline for UIL activities in the academic school year. According to a press release, remote coaching will remain in place while all in-person practices, rehearsals and workouts will stay suspended until further notice.
UIL Deputy Director Jamey Harrison says in a letter that the league is still committed to providing a reasonable acclimatization period for rehearsals and practices to occur, which may include participating in tournaments, meets and invitational competitions. However, she stressed to not make plans prior to UIL instruction and encouraged families to continue following guidelines from local, state and federal officials.
“We are hopeful, as you all are, that we can get back to completing each respective sport season and will provide specific guidance and information on how that will look upon return,” UIL Director of Athletics Susan Elza says in a letter. “We are both amazed and appreciative of the leadership of our athletic directors and coaches. We are inspired by the work that continues in a challenging environment and the creativity of the remote coaching that directly benefits the athletes across the state.”
