Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton issued legal guidance regarding the pandemic and schools on Tuesday saying, "local health authorities may not issue sweeping orders closing schools for the sole purpose of preventing future COVID-19 infections."
"Rather, their role is limited by statute to addressing specific, actual outbreaks of disease,” Paxton says. “School officials, both public and private, are the appropriate ones to decide whether, when and how to open school.”
In response to the release of this letter, Carroll ISD issued a statement on Twitter relating that the district is reviewing the letter with its attorneys and more information will come soon.
As of right now, schools in Tarrant County will remain online only until Sept. 28, according to an executive order. Exemptions to this order include special education students, students with limited internet access at home and private religious schools.
