With Dragon Football just weeks away, it’s time to get excited. Coming off another successful season in 2021, the team looks poised to make it far into the playoffs again. With a few new opponents and a handful of very familiar ones on the 2022 schedule, this season looks to be a great one.
Non-District
After a scrimmage at home against Arlington on Aug. 18, the Dragons’ first opponent of the regular season is El Paso Eastwood. Having never played them under head coach Riley Dodge, this will be a new match-up for the team. Last season, El Paso Eastwood went 8-5 overall with a 4-3 district record. Following that game, Southlake Carroll will take on Flower Mound Marcus, a team for which Riley served as offensive coordinator. The last time the Dragons faced the Marauders was in 2017 when they came out on top 35-21.
But it’s week three’s game to keep an eye on. Carroll will take on Cedar Hill on Green Out Night. The Longhorns went 8-5 last season and 12-2 in 2020, with three state titles and 23 playoff appearances to their name. Should history repeat itself, it’s bound to be an exciting game.
District
Once week four of the regular season kicks off, fans will see the Dragons take on a host of very recognizable district rivals, hoping to repeat their undefeated district record from last year. Taking on Keller Timber Creek first on Sept. 16. History is certainly on Carroll’s side as the team has outscored Timber Creek 136-31 in the last three seasons, making for a suitable game for Homecoming. From there, our hometown team will face Haltom and — after a bye week — will take on Keller and Keller Central — teams they respectively defeated 49-13 and 63-7 last season.
After playing against Keller Central, the Dragons’ season will continue with battles against Eaton and Byron Nelson. In 2021 and 2020, Carroll defeated Eaton 47-24 and 45-30, respectively. Meanwhile, the Dragons have defeated Byron Nelson every year since 2016, outscoring them 309-75 over the course of those six seasons. From there, the Dragons are set to end their regular season playing Keller Fossil Ridge, a team that served as their last regular season opponent in 2021 as well. With a 62-14 win in 2021 bolstering the chances of victory, the outlook is good for this regular season to end on a high note.
