With all the talent Southlake Carroll has in its starters this year, it’s not a stretch to say that some new records might be made this season. While the absence of former quarterback Quinn Ewers ensures coach Riley Dodge’s record in career passing yards — 8,246 during the 2005-07 seasons — will remain intact, there are a few records that aren’t quite set in stone. From most career rushing yards to the number of pass completions, here are a few Dragons who could break some records this season, according to TexasHighSchoolFootballHistory.com.
Owen Allen — Most Career Rushing Yards
In 2019, Allen rushed for 1,262 yards and nearly doubled that during the 2020 season, rushing for 2,063 yards. With those numbers, Allen has rushed 3,325 yards for the Dragons so far. To become the Dragon with the most career rushing yards, Allen just needs to rush for a little over 1,400 yards — 1,470 to be exact. Currently, Tre’ Newton holds the Southlake Carroll record for most career rushing yards with 4,795, which he achieved during the 2005-07 seasons.
Landon Samson — Most Receptions In A Season
For Landon Samson, a new record could just be around the corner. During the 2020 season, Landon Samson caught 75 passes, which is just 24 passes under the current record. McKay Jacobson, who caught 99 passes during the 2005 season as a senior, is the current record holder. But with his talent and experience, the South Carolina commit could potentially surpass him. After all, Samson is the team’s leading returning receiver and has already surpassed former Dragon Brady Boyd, who caught 71 passes last season.
Kaden Anderson — Most Pass Completions In A Game
Last season, former Dragon Quinn Ewers came just two completions away from tying the Southlake Carroll record for most completions in a game. Ewers threw 37 completions against Euless Trinity, and the current record is held by Ryan Agnew, who threw 39 completions in 2013 — also against Euless Trinity. Kaden Anderson may lack varsity experience, but his skill set is already highly regarded and with some talented and experienced receivers backing him up — the junior could potentially tie or break the record this season.
RJ Maryland — Most Touchdown Receptions In A Season
During his breakout junior season, tight end RJ Maryland had 30 receptions— 13 of them for touchdowns. So it stands to reason the 6’-4” Boston College commit could become a favorite target of upstart quarterback Kaden Anderson. In order to put his name in the record books Maryland would need to upend the current record holders Clint Renfro and Andrew Hansen who each caught 23 touchdowns during the 2004 and 2002 seasons, respectively. As the #2 returning receiver this year — and a three-star recruit, according to 247Sports.com — 2021 might just be RJ’s year.
Southlake Carroll — Most Points In A Full Season
Though a tough schedule awaits them, this season’s Dragons are up to the task. And should they score more than 803 total points during the season, this team will hold the new record. Currently held by the 1992 Southlake Carroll team — who went on to win the state championship that year — breaking this record will be no easy feat. But with a potent run game and speed and size at receiver, it could be done.
