Candidate Name: Victor Avila
Occupation: Retired supervisory special agent
How long have you lived in Southlake? Our family moved to Southlake over two years ago, just like many families have recently done. I am a native Texan. My wife Claudia and I chose Southlake for its safety, security and high-quality education offered by Carroll ISD.
What originally brought you to town? Claudia and I have been married for over 22 years and have two beautiful children; Sofia and Victor Emilio. We chose Southlake for the high quality of education in Carroll ISD and the safety and security of our community to raise our kids. We have lived in many cities in the U.S., Mexico and Europe. We are here to stay and are invested in our community.
What inspired you to run for city council? I have dedicated my entire life to public service, first as a law enforcement officer serving in some of the most dangerous places in the world. Then, as a U.S. diplomat, to advance the mission and national security interests of the U.S. in Latin America and Europe. I am stepping up to serve as a volunteer on our city council as I want to continue giving back to our community and our country.
What in your background prepared you for this responsibility? I have extensive experience in all levels of government. I have worked at the city, state, federal and international government levels. My experience will add value to the city council and it allows me to bring sound judgment, good decision making and consensus-building skills that will benefit the citizens of Southlake.
What do you hope to bring to this role? I have three priorities as a city councilman: The safety and security of our citizens and their property, especially in our schools, lowering property taxes with a balanced budget and protecting our citizens from apartments or any form of multi-family housing.
What makes you different from other candidates? I am not a politician or a salesman. I am a retired law enforcement officer and diplomat, having dedicated my entire life to public service. I bring a fresh and independent perspective to city council. I am not beholden to any special interests and will always work to serve and protect the citizens of our city.
What do you hope to accomplish if you are elected onto the council? I will work hard to keep our schools and community safe, lower the burden of property taxes and keep apartments away from our beautiful city.
What else do you want people to know about you? I have faced the utmost adversity after being shot in the line of duty. I survived by the grace of God. I was shot three times and my partner was killed when we were ambushed by a cartel while on assignment in Mexico. I returned to public service until my retirement. I will bring integrity, transparency and unmatched dedication to public service to our city council.
