The Carroll ISD board of trustees unanimously approved adding a water polo program to Carroll Athletics during the 2022-23 school year.
CISD Athletics director Steve Keasler presented the program and its cost to the board during its regular meeting on Dec. 13. The sport, which was added to the University Interscholastic League’s constitution and contest rules as a pilot program, will begin its season on Aug. 1 and end around Oct. 28. There will be a varsity and junior varsity team for both the boys and girls, with a head coach overseeing both programs alongside two assistant coaches.
“We feel like we can provide that,” Keasler says during the meeting. “We have enough kids that are interested in the program to be able to do that right off the bat.”
A survey about the water polo program will be sent out to the community early next year. Keasler says the goal is to hire a head coach by April or May 2022.
In addition to the new Carroll Athletic teams, CISD will continue to have a water polo club compete in its own season. The girls water polo club previously placed second at state last year.
