The season opener of Southlake Carroll’s football season will no longer include a matchup between head coach Riley Dodge and his father Todd Dodge, the head coach at Austin Westlake, according to Austin Westlake’s new tentative football schedule.
Instead of opening the season at AT&T Stadium on August 28, Austin Westlake will begin its season with a scrimmage against Cedar Park on September 25, with the regular season opener on Oct. 2 against Waco Midway.
No new schedule has been released for Southlake Carroll’s football season, and as of now, Dragon Football is scheduled to start its season on September 4 against Rockwall Heath.
“We are incredibly disappointed in this game, unfortunately having to be cancelled due to COVID-19 and the new regulations handed down by the state,” says Carroll Executive Director of Athletics Steve Keasler. “We have worked diligently to put this together for well over a year for the UIL’s celebration of their 100th year, but due to unforeseen events this was unable to take place. We look forward to having the opportunity to play this football season in a safe controlled environment. Our football schedule is still being reworked at this time and is not yet ready for distribution.”
While at Southlake Carroll, Todd Dodge amassed a 98-11 overall record and was named national coach of the year twice. His son, Riley, was hired as the Dragons’ head coach in 2018 and led the team to a 13-1 record in the 2019 season and received the Landry Award’s Coach of the Year in 2019.
