The 2018brDistrict 5-6A Champions the Southlake Carroll Dragons (10-0) rolled over thebrTimber Creek Falcons (2-8) 57-13 Friday to complete their undefeated districtbrseason and continue on to the state playoffs.
New head coachbrRiley Dodge says he is excited to be in this position in his first year as headbrcoach, and wasn't sure what to expect at the beginning of the season.
“I don't knowbrwhat I necessarily expected when I first got here,” Dodge says. “As the days,brweeks and months went on we started to figure out what these kids were made of,brthey just wanted to work and they love to play football.”
Carrollbrcelebrated its many valuable seniors Friday, who are now headed into the lastbrhigh school playoff run of their careers.
Seniorbrquarterback Will Bowers threw for 229 yards and two touchdowns with a 67brpercent completion rate on the night. In the passing game, Glenn Mitchellbrproved to be Bowers' main target, with over 100 receiving yards and twobrtouchdowns for the Dragons. Carson White also had his hand in the final score,brwith an incredible catch for a touchdown (pictured).
Senior runningbrback TJ McDaniel brought the run game early with three rapid rushingbrtouchdowns and just under 130 rushing yards. Eli Furgal and Jared Randall also came up big when their numbers were called, racking up one rushing touchdown each.
Senior defensivebrend Colton Hunter led the Dragon defense with nine tackles, while BrandonbrHowell recorded his second interception of the season. The defense held thebrFalcons to only two touchdowns and under 20 points.
The Dragons putbrthe first seven points on the scoreboard after a two-play possession resultedbrin a 51-yard pass from Bowers to Mitchell into the end zone. The next drivebrresulted in a 30-yard field goal from Joe McFadden to add three points, puttingbrthe Dragons up 10-0.
The Dragonsbrscored again early in the second quarter with a 10 yard run from McDaniel intobrthe end zone, making the score 16-0.
A fumblebrrecovery by Dragon Pride Player of the Week Michael Parrish midway through the second quarter turned the ball backbrover to the Dragon offense, and resulted in McDaniel recording his second touchdownbrof the night, increasing the score 23-0.
The Falcons madebrtheir first statement of the night with a 13-yard rush into the end zone. Abrfailed two-point conversion only gave the Falcons six points.
McDaniel notchedbrhis third touchdown of the night late in the second quarter with a quick fivebryard run into the end zone. The Dragons led the Falcons 29-6 going intobrhalftime.
The Dragonsbrscored again on their first possession of the second half after Furgal rushedbrfor 32 yards into the end zone, putting the Dragons up 36-6. Another touchdownbron their second possession of the third quarter added another seven points tobrthe board, 43-6.
Carroll scored abrthird time in the third quarter with a pass from Blake Smith to White for 10bryards and a touchdown. The Dragons led the Falcons 50-6 heading into the fourthbrquarter.
Timber Creekbrscored its final touchdown early in the fourth to narrow the spread 50-13, butbrit would not be enough to recover from the deficit after Carroll scored onebrmore time to end the game 57-13.
This week, thebrDragons will be transitioning into playoff mode as they prepare to face Coppell on Saturday in the first round.
