The Carroll Dragon football team opened its season on Friday night against Westlake, suffering a one-score loss, 20-14. Lil'Jordan Humprhey (Dragon Pride Player of the Week) had both of the Dragons' scores. He totaled 17 carries for 93 yards, and four receptions for 78 yards.
The Chaps scored first when quarterback Sam Ehlinger tossed a 5-yard touchdown to running back Canaan Clark-Bateman with 6:43 left in the first quarter.
The Dragons got off to a rough start as they didn't reach the first down marker for the first time until the very late stages of the first frame. Then, with 11:22 left in the second quarter, Westlake extended its lead, running the ball in for a touchdown on 4th and goal.
Montana Murphy got the nod at quarterback for the Dragons. His 60-yard pass to Kameron Duhon brought some promise to the offense, taking them all the way down to the 13 yard line. Unfortunately, Murphy turned the ball over on an interception by Max Mangum just three plays later.
Battling it out, the Dragons took possession of the ball with just over 5 minutes left in the half. About a minute later, Murphy put the ball in the hands of Zach Farrar for a long gain and getting the Dragons into scoring position. On the very next play, Farrar got the trick play off on a pass to Humprhey for 16 yards. Humprhey carried the ball in the rest of the way for a 6-yard touchdown and putting the Dragons on the board before the end of the first half, 14-7.
Westlake would score its last with just over a minute left to play in the half on an Ehlinger pass to Chase Cokley. The extra point did not convert, and the Chaps led 20-7 at the conclusion of the half.
The Dragons scored their final touchdown with 5:23 left in the third on a 1-yard leap over the line by Humprhey.
Murphy finished the day 13/27 for 202 yards and an interception. He also ran the ball 10 times for 38 yards. Duhon led the Dragons in receiving yards with three catches for 83 yards.
On defense, junior linebacker Grant Phelps and senior linebacker IV Seacat led the way with 11 tackles each. Junior defensive lineman Ryan Miller registered two sacks and three tackles for loss. Junior defensive back Barrett Buck knocked down three passes.
Carroll hits the road for the next matchup on Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m., to face Union in Tulsa, Okla.
