When the Dragons kick off the 2021 football season, quarterback Quinn Ewers will be at Ohio State, beginning his college football career a year early.
First reported by Justin Wells from "Inside Texas," the five-star quarterback and "The Dallas Morning News'" No. 1 recruit will now be able to profit off of his name, image and likeness while participating in Ohio State's football camp, which begins tomorrow. Ewers also updated his bio on Twitter to reflect his decision.
In a statement released via Twitter, Quinn says the decision is not just financial.
"This is about what is best for my football career. At 18, and with one final class about to be completed to earn my high school degree, I feel it's time to get the jump on my college career that is available to me," Quinn says. "I am eager to start learning from coach Day and the rest of the coaching staff."
Quinn also addresses his Southlake Carroll teammates in his statement.
"To my fellow Carroll Dragons: I will cherish the memories we made together. Although I won't be there on the field with you this year, I will be rooting for you," Quinn says in his statement. "You're my teammates now and forever."
In their own statement provided to Southlake Style and shared via Facebook, head coach Riley Dodge and the Carroll ISD Athletics Department says "the entire Dragon community will greatly miss Quinn on and off the field."
"He is an incredible young man who exemplifies what it means to be a Dragon — inspiring excellence in his teammates and modeling what excellence looks like in the classroom and on the field," the statement reads. "Dragon Nation is very proud of what Quinn has accomplished, and we wish him the best at Ohio State."
During his time as a Dragon, Ewers threw for over 4,000 yards during his sophomore season and 2,000 yards his junior season. Named to the 2021 Elite 11 roster, Ewers was also nominated for The Landry Award in 2020 and selected to be in the All-American Bowl alongside former teammate Landon Samson.
