After defeating Denton Guyer 46-34 Riley Dodge's Dragons (5-0) have hit the national stage as the No. 23 ranked team in the country, according to USA Today.
What’s left to be said about the week after the biggest game of Quinn Ewers’ short career? The upstart sophomore was responsible for six of the Dragons (5-0) eight touchdowns in a 46-34 win over district and state rivals Denton Guyer (4-1).
Ewers, the DFW Elite Realty Player of the Game, sponsored by Thomas & Sharon Michael, Realtors, was responsible for 88% of the Dragon’s offensive output throwing for 333 yards and four scores while running for another 117 yards and two scores.
The statement win now has Ewers name on the minds of more than just Southlake faithful — he garnered offensive player of the week honors by the Dallas Morning News and nationally as the Southwest Region’s Player of the Week by MaxPreps.com. The win has also catapulted the Dragons onto the national stage as the No. 23 ranked team in the country, according to USA Today.
Dodge has been most impressed with Ewers’ approach to the game and how the moment never seems to be too much for this relative newcomer. Most younger signal callers may rely on a single receiver or a reliable running back to help ease the pressure. This hasn’t been the case for the Dragons this year, who tout four receivers with double-digit catches led by John Manero and Wills Meyer with 34 receptions apiece.
Gone is the reliable workhorse TJ McDaniel, but in his place are not one but four reliable runners behind and experienced and stout offensive line. Kannon Kadi, Jack Abram, Cade Wood and Owen Allen have all registered more than 100 yards rushing on the season.
Dodge’s team continues to impress with its leadership, balance and next man up mentality.
Looking Ahead
The Dragons will play host to Trophy Club Byron Nelson at Dragon Stadium on October 11. Under former Carroll offensive assistant Travis Pride, the Bobcats finished 3-4 in the district after an 0-3 start narrowly missing the playoffs a year ago.
Back for his fourth season, he and the Bobcats (0-5) will need a similar turnaround to salvage the season. Despite having yet to find the win column, it’s not all doom and gloom for the Bobcats, who have lost three games by just six points combined. Last week’s heartbreaking loss to Keller Central 15-14 will undoubtedly have the squad ready to prove itself this week.
Pride should see his balanced offense benefit from the return of junior quarterback Hudson White’s after taking over the starting role midway through his sophomore season.
White (541 yards, 3 TDs) has had to find developing receivers after losing his top targets to graduation. He has begun a solid connection with junior wide-out Cooper Stillwell to the tune of 303 yards and two TDs.
When it comes to the ground game, White hands the ball off to Max Modeste. The 6’1”, 183-pound junior is already creating a buzz with his talent as a ball carrier who is averaging 7.7 yards per carry with seven scoring.
On defense, senior linebacker Logan Riojas (4.8 sec. 40-yard) can keep offenses off-balance, as he registered 88 tackles and an interception last season. Junior defensive back Houston Buckner snagged two picks last season as well.
Pink Out Night
Friday will also act as the Dragons’ 11th annual Pink Out Night. Former CISD student Amy Moan founded the event that strives to honor local breast cancer survivors and raise funds and awareness to fight breast cancer.
Survivors will be a part of a special on-field pre-game ceremony that will include an escort and walk through the Dragon football helmet onto the field. Survivors will also receive free general admission and reserved parking passes. If you are a survivor with an interest in participating, you can fill out this form.
The game is sure to be a night of celebration for all attendees. So don’t miss out on the action by purchasing your ticket prior to heading out to Dragon Stadium.
