Aaron Cottrell resigned as Southlake Carroll's head boys soccer coach last Thursday, according to a statement he released on Twitter.
“I have put much thought and prayer into making the right decision,” Cottrell says via Twitter. “It has been a difficult last few months fighting for a program full of incredible and deserving young men. It’s about the kids. Always has been for me.”
Cottrell joined Carroll ISD in 2018 after the former boys soccer coach Greg Oglesby retired, according to MySouthlakeNews.com. With Cottrell at the helm, the boys soccer team earned back-to-back district titles in 2019 and 2020 — ranking No. 1 in both the state and country those years — and was the district runner-up in 2021.
“I want to sincerely thank all my former and current players who have played for me,” Cottrell says via Twitter. “You are the reason we were successful. I love you boys more than you will ever know.”
Although he won't be the head soccer coach anymore, Cottrell did confirm that he will continue teaching art at Carroll Senior High School, according to his statement.
"We appreciate coach Cottrell’s dedication and passion for our soccer program over the last three years and wish him the best of luck,” Carroll ISD athletics director Steve Keasler says in a statement. “We are looking forward to a successful soccer season for the Carroll Dragon boys soccer team."
