The Carroll cross-country team made a strong showing at the Woodbridge XC Classic in California last Friday.
Racing against some of the top high school programs in the country over a three-mile course, both the girls and boys finished in the top three at the national contest. With junior Alexandra Walsh finishing fourth overall with a time of 16:03, the girls team finished second in the sweepstakes division. Senior Ava Bushaw followed behind in 15th place, along with senior Audrey Dunn at 26th, junior Sylvia Schwedler in 32nd, sophomore Elizabeth Smits in 51st, senior Natalie Ng in 73rd and sophomore Gabriella Tesoriero in 118th.
The boys were nearly as successful in their own sweepstakes race, finishing third overall with senior Logan Cantu leading the way with a time of 14:20 in 20th place. Junior Zach Troutman came from behind in 42nd place, along with freshman Caden Leonard in 50th, sophomore Alex Severson in 59th, senior Robert Freeman in 61st, senior David Fisher in 92nd and sophomore Blake Bullard in 129th.
“Our young men and women faced some of the strongest high school cross-country teams in the U.S. tonight, and they proved they could compete with the best of the best,” head cross-country coach Justin Leonard says via press release. “They rose to the challenge and raced well.”
The Dragons will race again on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the University of Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival.
