Meet your 2020 6A Division I regional champions. The Dragons clinched the title following a 59-35 win over Euless Trinity — sending them to the state semifinals for the first time since 2011, which is the last time they won the state championship.
Quarterback Quinn Ewers — our first Dragon Pride Player of the week, sponsored by Thomas and Sharon Michael | DFW Elite Realty — led the team in stellar fashion. The junior threw for 450 yards, six touchdowns and only one interception. With a 90% completion rate, Ewers threw 37 complete passes.
Wide receiver Brady Boyd — our second Dragon Pride Player of the week, sponsored by Thomas and Sharon Michael | DFW Elite Realty — was a frequent target for Ewers. The senior caught 17 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns. Fellow wide receiver Landon Samson also shined offensively, catching 14 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
And like nearly every week before, running back Owen Allen continued to post great numbers. The sophomore rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his season totals to 1,831 yards rushed and 24 touchdowns.
Defensively, Southlake Carroll did well, keeping Euless Trinity to only 343 offensive yards and 35 points. Junior defensive back Max Reyes was the defensive star, recording 12 tackles. Following Reyes, junior linebacker Baker Barrett — who also recorded two sacks — and sophomore defensive back Logan Anderson recorded eight tackles each.
Next for the Dragons is a familiar opponent. Southlake Carroll is set to play the Duncanville Panthers on January 9 at 3 p.m. Globe Life Park. The Panthers defeated the Dragons in both 2018 and 2019, ousting them from the playoffs each time.
Duncanville is currently ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 7 nationally, according to MaxPreps.com, compared to Southlake Carroll’s ranking of No. 11 in the state and No. 25 nationally, according to MaxPreps.com.
Kickoff for the game against Duncanville is set for 3 p.m. at Globe Life Park. Tickets can be purchased here once they go live.
