Intense drama, heartfelt laughter and plenty of ridiculously loveable moments make up Spanish telenovelas—and WaterTower Theatre’s production of “Guadalupe in the Guest Room.” The regional premiere of this show, written by award-winning playwright Tony Meneses, is about Guadalupe, a Mexican woman whose daughter recently passed away. When she moves in with her American son-in-law, Steve, to translate the children’s books her daughter wrote to Spanish, the grieving roommates have a hard time communicating. However, watching a silly telenovela together helps bond the two, who realize that speaking the same language isn’t the only way to understand each other. Pro tip: bring bring your own tissues!
