Texas Native Artist Georgeanne Deen to Conduct "The Artist's Eye"
Submitted by Barbara Smith, Kimbell Art Museum
Georganne Deen, a California-based artist and Fort Worth native, will present a gallery talk in the Kimbell Art Museum's "Artist's Eye" series on Saturday, September 21, at 11 a.m. Claire Barry, director of conservation at the Kimbell, will moderate this free program.
Deen----an artist, poet, and musician----began to challenge "polite society" from a young age with her self-expressive poetry. Following studies in printmaking and experimental narrative at East Texas State University, she attended the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles. Her intensely personal style takes on the extremes and nuances of human behavior, as she taps into underground comics, high fashion, and difficult childhood memories in her darkly beautiful paintings. Her artwork has been featured in several exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world, including the Power Plant, Toronto; Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany; LACMA, Los Angeles; and the MAC, Dallas. She will discuss her own artwork in relation to Michelangelo'sTorment of Saint Anthony, in the Kimbell collection.
"The Artist's Eye" is an ongoing program moderated by Kimbell staff. It brings artists to the Museum to discuss works in the permanent collection, share the special insights of the practicing professional, and relate older art to contemporary artistic concerns, including their own.
