What is a Dexa scan?
Traditionally, Dexa scanning was primarily used to measure bone density for patients with osteoporo- sis. Technology advancements have since made it possible to measure other types of tissue, allowing an accurate measurement of your body’s composition. This means the Dexa scanner can tell you with a high degree of accuracy how much of your body weight is muscle, fat or bone. It is currently the most accurate way to determine your body fat percentage and muscle mass, and can even break down specific parts of your body.
Why is Dexa scanning helpful?
Having an accurate measure of your body composition is important for your overall health maintenance and is particularly helpful for weight loss and fitness. A scale is a poor tool for measuring progress because your overall weight can fluctuate day to day based on a number of factors that aren’t related to actual fat loss. Additionally, anyone who attempts to lose weight by incorporating exercise will often replace fat with muscle growth. If you are using a scale and don’t see a change despite your hard work, that can be very demotivating. Having an accurate starting point is important in helping you stick with changes and making them lifelong habits. If you are starting any kind of fitness or weight loss journey, you should definitely establish your baseline first whether through a Dexa scan or something else.
How often should I get a Dexa scan?
If you are planning to change your body composition through weight loss or a new fitness program, we recommend a monthly Dexa scan. If you’re looking to maintain your current status, we recommend a quarterly scan.
Who should consider Dexa scanning?
Anyone who is interested in their health status should consider Dexa, whether they want to improve their body health, want to maintain where they’re at or are just wanting to see what health risks they may have.
