Holly was last year's Fat Bear Week champion and this year, she's looking to defend her title.
Without a doubt, it’s one of the best times of the year. And now with the pandemic, it’s needed more than ever. Tomorrow marks the beginning of Fat Bear Week, a week devoted to determining which Katmai National Park bear is the fattest.
Voting opens tomorrow and through a bracket-style tournament, this year’s fattest bear will be crowned on October 6 — a.k.a. Fat Bear Tuesday. Last year’s Fat Bear Week winner was the magnificent Holly, whose appearance in early autumn “somewhat resembles the shape and color of a toasted marshmallow,” according to the Fat Bear Week website.
How fat a bear gets now is important, as bears will lose one-third of their body weight during hibernation in the winter according to the Fat Bear Week website. Bears most often indulge in salmon to gain their hibernation weight.
While you eagerly wait for the chance to begin voting, you can download your own Fat Bear Week bracket, watch live cams from Katmai National Park, learn more about the bears participating in this year’s Fat Bear Week, order Fat Bear Week merchandise or donate to support the Katmai National Park.
