Here at Black Door Renovation, we have the opportunity to work for all kinds of great people with all kinds of styles and visions. We’ve done finish outs in all kinds of styles — traditional, modern, transitional, farmhouse, midcentury, you name it — and we love them all when they’re finished. But occasionally a design comes along that takes your breath away.
This featured master suite, finished earlier this year in Southlake, is one of those designs. Our clients came to us with plans for a complete gut of their master suite and a design aesthetic that was as beautiful as it was thoughtful. They engaged JHR Interior Design out of Dallas to draw a master suite that would evoke a sense of European modern luxury.
The plans called first for a complete gut of the master suite, including the interior walls separating the space. The entire floorplan was reimagined to create two grand closets, an office for bills and paperwork, and of course an open concept vanity/tub/shower area.
With plans in hand, we can get to work. Anytime a project calls for the removal of interior walls, we take our time to evaluate the load-bearing nature of the existing framing and support loads from the second story as per engineer instructions. And in a project like this one that requires moving drains for plumbing fixtures, which requires cutting and/or jackhammering, we have to approach our plumbing plan very carefully so that we don’t critically damage the existing slab or cut post-tension cables if any exist.
Once the framing and mechanicals are finished and green tagged, we get to start working on the pretty stuff! This design called for 6mm porcelain slabs on the shower and over the vanity, and as you can see from the pictures, we book matched the shower slabs to create a seamless, appealing flow.
As we look closer, the details of this shower turned out remarkably well. We constructed a floating marble bench and used the same black marble on the back of the oversized niched. To set the mood, we installed hidden LED trim lighting in the back of the shower and the niche. The lighting throughout the bathroom makes
The other finishes in the bathroom are just as stunning. From the brushed gold hardware to the beautiful freestanding Almalfi tub to the handblown glass light fixtures, every detail is designed to create a space that is both inviting and beautiful.
The closet design for this job was equally thoughtful. JHR Interior Design laid out each closet specifically tailored to the needs of both his and her wardrobes. The amazing laminate cabinetry provides the rich visuals that complete the modern, almost hotel-like feel of this master suite.
But the best thing about any project is always the client. These clients were a joy to work with. They were knowledgeable, supportive of our employees and subcontractors, helpful in the design and management process and had a clear vision of where they wanted the project to go.
In the end, a successful renovation experience requires a strong vision and a healthy partnership between client, contractor, designer and trade partners. This project combined all of these elements, and we couldn’t be happier with the final product.
