Do You Have a Hard Time Starting, Maintaining An Exercise Program?
If so, it’s a good time to start thinking about exercise completely differently.
“We are optimizing exercise to maximize effectiveness and efficiency so that people can enjoy more of what matters most in life,” says Exercise Coach founder Brian Cygan.
In the second episode of the “Strength Changes Everything” podcast series, Brian Cygan, Exercise Coach founder and Amy Hudson, an Exercise Coach franchisee, debunk common misconceptions regarding exercise. Understanding these misconceptions will change the way you view your exercise objectives and help you to start and sustain an exercise program.
The first step to starting a sustainable fitness program is to understand your motivation for exercise and the fitness objectives that matter the most you. For example, do you exercise for…
- Health: Prevent or reduce the risk of disease in the body
- Fitness: Increase strength and flexibility
- Sports performance: Improve performance in a specific sport or multiple sports
As Brian and Amy explain in the podcast, many if not all fitness objectives that matter the most to you can be achieved through strength training that is effective, efficient and safe.
- Effectiveness: Strength training that is sufficiently intense to require the muscles to adapt and make the body stronger.
- Efficiency: Performing the optimal number of exercises during a session to generate the most pronounced positive impact on the entire body musculature. It is not about counting reps or steps or the time spent at the gym. More is not better. Research studies have shown that a single set of an exercise at the right level of intensity is more effective than multiple sets of the same exercise. Twenty minutes of intense exercise can deliver significant positive results in strength.
- Safety: Avoiding injury by controlling the forces that are applied to the body during strength training. A key component to reducing risk of injury while strength training is using slow controlled movements instead of explosive movements.
