Southlake Plastic Surgery & Med Spa is proud to add hormone optimization and wellness therapy to its list of offered services. We are committed to helping our patients look and feel their best. We aim to optimize our patients’ health and well-being while preventing the negative effects of aging by balancing hormones, addressing any vitamin deficiencies and providing a broad range of aesthetic procedures. We individualize each treatment to fit the patient. We believe in getting to the root of the problem rather than slapping a band-aid on the symptoms.
Hormone deficiencies are one of the leading causes of accelerating the aging process. Testosterone levels begin to decline in men beginning in their early 30s and is referred to as “andropause.” In both men and women, testosterone has been shown to increase energy, improve sexual function, restore sleep patterns, relieve depression and anxiety, improve memory and concentration, increase bone density and decrease fat mass.
Men and women need adequate levels of testosterone for optimal mental and physical health and for the prevention of chronic illnesses like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cardiovascular disease. Along with chronic illness prevention, bio-identical pellets have been shown to be superior in relieving menopausal and andropausal symptoms when compared to conventional hormone replacement therapy. Bio-identical hormones are plant-sourced proteins structurally engineered to replicate the body's normal hormone levels, minimizing the potential risks and side effects.
Pellets have been used in both men and women since the late 1930s. Synthetic hormones are similar but not identical to the body’s hormones, leading to increased risks and side effects such as those negative effects published in the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative study. Patients who have failed other types of hormone therapy may have a very high success rate with pellets. Testosterone and estrogen are available in pellet form. Progesterone is not available in pellet form, but it can still be offered as bio-identical in an oral format.
Initially, patients are asked to complete a checklist to see if they are exhibiting any symptoms of hormone imbalance or vitamin deficiency. If symptoms are present, a wellness lab panel is drawn to identify possible causes. If a hormone imbalance is identified, hormone replacement will be recommended via bio-identical hormone pellet therapy once the treating provider has ruled out any contraindications. These pellets are implanted into the subcutaneous tissue of the buttock region via a simple, in-office procedure under local anesthetic.
A small 1/2"-1" incision is made and closed with a steri-strip. The pellets will release small, physiologic doses of hormones over time according to the patient's cardiac output. The pellets completely dissolve and will not need to be removed. Lab levels of hormones are reevaluated during hormone therapy, usually four to six weeks after pellet insertion. After the first year of therapy, hormone levels may be followed less frequently. Pellets deliver consistent, healthy levels of hormones for 3-5 months in women and 4-6 months in men.
The wellness lab panel may also reveal vitamin deficiencies in patients. Southlake Plastic Surgery offers Lipo-B injections as well as an array of oral supplements, including vitamin D. Vitamin B12 and B6 supplementation to help patients improve their metabolism, sleep, mood, cognitive function, immunity and energy.
Vitamin B12 and B6 also help to reduce inflammation and homocysteine levels, which, in turn, lowers the chances of heart ailments, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease and certain types of cancers. When used in conjunction with diet and exercise, lipotropic nutrients aid in weight loss and prevention of gallstones, regulate insulin, reduce cholesterol and optimize healing. Optimal levels of vitamin D are associated with cardiovascular and cancer protection across various studies. For more information, visit BioTEMedical.com.
