Running Isn't The Only Way To Train Your Heart And Lungs
Runners often find that there is missing muscle mass in their bodies when they engage in strength training. By adding strength training to their fitness routine, they find that they can perform at an even higher level.
"Strength Changes Everything" podcast co-hosts Brian Cygan, Exercise Coach founder, and Amy Hudson, an Exercise Coach franchisee, explain why high-intensity strength training is the best way to reinvigorate your muscles, heart and lungs at the same time.
Typically, aerobic exercise is associated with a high heart rate, but that’s not the only time the aerobic energy system is engaged. When we start to do something more demanding, energy production shifts to become more anaerobic, which is why strength training drives increased heart rate response. The more demand on the muscles, the greater the cardiovascular response.
It does not take daily, joint-punishing cardio to train your heart and lungs. If you are a runner, you can add the benefits of strength training in as little as two, 20-minute sessions per week at The Exercise Coach. To learn more, listen to the "Strength Changes Everything" podcast episode 105.
