Summer Foot Care To Help Beat The Heat!
Kayla Pettit
Summer is here, and we can all agree the heat has also made its presence known. While most of us would like to stay indoors in front of our air conditioner, there are many things necessary that require us to go outside. Here are some tips to protect your feet from the heat:
Sandal Selection
It is very tempting when it is so hot outside to wear any sandals you have available without seeing if they are supportive enough to protect your feet. This can result in exacerbating an old injury or even causing a new one. Be sure any sandal you wear has good arch support, proper straps and even a deep-seated heel. If you are unsure what certain qualities your sandals need for your foot type, make an appointment with your podiatrist for a foot-type review.
Swelling
With record-breaking temperatures, lower extremity swelling is being seen in increasing numbers, even for those who do not typically experience swelling. A couple of tips to help control this are elevating your feet when you get home, Epsom salt soaks and wearing compression stockings — even if it is until you get home and out of the heat. If persistent swelling occurs, it is best to speak with your primary doctor.
Fungus
It’s that time of year when fungal infections begin, and even small instances of nail fungus or athlete's foot can get significantly worse over time. The more we sweat in our shoes and socks, the worse the infection can get. Symptoms of a fungal foot infection are redness, itching, scaling and color changes to the nails. The first sign of any of these, contact your podiatrist to begin treatment immediately.
Regardless of record-breaking heat temperatures, the summer is a time of fun, relaxation and excitement. Keep these tips in mind and enjoy the rest of yours! If you have any questions or concerns regarding your feet or ankles, call us at Foot and Ankle Associates of North Texas today.
